Privacy Policy for Root
Last updated: October 6, 2026
This policy covers ilybot, the version of ily for the Root app ("ily," "we," "us"). It explains what ily stores when it's installed in a Root community, where that lives, and the choices you have. The Discord bot has its own privacy policy.
1. Where your data lives
Root runs ily on Root's own servers. Everything ily saves is kept in Root's storage for bots, separately for each community ily is installed in, so one community's data is never shared with or visible to another. We don't run our own database for the Root bot.
2. What ily stores
- Root identifiers: member, channel, role and message IDs, so settings and records point at the right place.
- Settings your staff choose: prefix, log channels, welcome messages, automod words, ticket and jail setup, and similar configuration.
- Records features need: moderation cases and notes, XP and levels, economy balances and items, pets, quests, reaction and colour roles, giveaways, polls, reminders, birthdays, tags, highlights words, suggestions, starboard entries and server activity counts.
- Things you ask ily to keep: text you save on purpose, such as tags, sticky messages, scheduled messages, suggestions and confessions. For confessions, ily stores who wrote each one so community staff can act on abuse.
- Name and role history: past usernames and role changes, so
,namehistoryand, rolehistorywork. Pictures aren't stored, only that one changed. - Backups: if staff run
,backup save, a copy of the community's roles, channels and ily settings.
Message content. ily reads messages as they arrive to run commands, automod, XP and games. It keeps the text of recent messages in memory only (for snipe and the edit/delete log), and that is cleared whenever ily restarts. It is not written to storage unless you save it on purpose as above.
3. How we use it
Only to run ily's features in your community, keep it working and secure, and answer your requests. We don't sell your data and we don't use it for advertising.
4. Who else is involved
- Root, which hosts ily, stores its data and delivers its messages and notifications.
- Feeds and word games: when staff add an RSS, YouTube or Reddit feed, ily fetches it from that site. Some word games check words against public dictionaries (Datamuse, dictionaryapi.dev). Only the feed address or the word is sent.
5. How long we keep it
Data is kept while ily is installed in your community and is needed for the feature it belongs to. Some records clean themselves up (for example, ended giveaways after 30 days and activity counts after about a month). Removing ily from a community stops all further collection there.
6. Your choices
- Stop name history with
,historyoptout, which also deletes what's stored (,historyoptinturns it back on). - Remove your own highlights, reminders, tags, birthday or pet with their commands.
- Ask your community's staff, who can clear warnings, cases and other records.
- Contact us to ask for access to or deletion of your data. Some IDs are needed for ily to work, so full deletion may mean removing ily from the community.
7. Children
ily isn't directed to children under 13, or under the minimum age to use Root where you live, and we don't knowingly collect their information.
8. Security
ily's data is held in Root's infrastructure and only reachable by ily in that community. No storage is perfectly secure, so we can't guarantee absolute security.
9. Changes
We may update this policy. When we do, the date above changes, and big changes may be announced in our support server.
